Teater Calderon in Madrid

The emblematic Teatro Calderon in Madrid is located within walking distance of the hotel where we stayed during our recent Spanish vacation. We walked into the Plaza de Jacinto Benavente from the north-eastern side, enjoying a beautiful view of the building from a perspective where a number of Ederberry trees were lined up in a row leading to the Theatre’s entrance.

Those beautiful trees were blooming everywhere in the city during our stay. That we found especially lovely, as it reminded us of our childhood and the taste of elderberry syrups beside the enchanting sensation of natural presence in an urban setting, cast by the scenery.

Given that we landed in Madrid just a few hours before, after a night spent on an airplane travelling over the ocean, I only had energy to mark down the site and take a photo with my cell phone to remember.

The Plaza was relatively busy that late afternoon, especially given that vehicles can drive on the streets just North and West of that building, and given that the central area was under construction, with workers still operating machineries at the site.

However, in early June, the volume from tourism is not yet high enough to overcrowd the city and make it impossible to find a free patio table at one of the restaurants in the lineup at the base of the building seen behind the trees.

I took my time to film the building from the same spot (the entrance to a McDonald’s restaurant), the next morning and at noon too, but it was only the following day, walking there again, that I noticed the clock at the top of the building and how it naturally gets highlighted in the afternoon.

I was in the mood on-site to sketch the scenery in the notebook, planning to use it as an inspiration for a painting later on.

Last week, I had time to work on a painting inspired by the sketch. For those curious to see how that went, I published a short video on YouTube for that.
