Fading glory of the Bath of Caracalla
A year ago while visiting Rome, we did a walk along the Via Apia. Returning into the city, we did a tour of the impressive ruins of the Bath of Caracalla.
It was just before noon of this sunny day in late August when I took the photo shot to the left.
In it, I like a lot how the narrative of fading away among the strong shades of the massive vegetation to the left reflects exactly the age group of the people visiting the ruins as well as the impressive antiquity of the walls in full display to the right of the image.
I am thinking that the pathway at the focal point of the image can be regarded as a passage of time. The symbolism comes naturally out of the scenery.
Last week, I did work on the composition last week preparing a thumbnail and a small color study on an Arches watercolor paper of small size 12×9 inch just to familiarize myself with it.
Eventually, I painted the study on half sheet watercolor paper after modifying the composition a little bit for better contrasts and a richer hierarchy of values.
