Painting a cityscape of Venice

During the holidays, I had time to look at photos I had taken a long time ago. In my collection, I stopped at one taken in Venice, along Riva degli Schiavoni, back in the Summer of 2005, on a market day.

There is some symmetry there to be represented and an interesting one-point perspective centred on the tower of St Mark’s Campanile seen far back to the middle of the painting. The two sides of the picture make lovely triangle shapes, whereas the top of the lamppost in the middle touches an imaginary straight line ending from the Tower and pointing at the group of ladies chatting at the front of the image.

As it has not happened lately, though, this morning I had the inspiration and mood to sit down and paint after the scene, a sketch on a 6×8-inch watercolor paper. So, here is the result
